<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Published 1989
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Publisher Faber and Faber
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Pages 254
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">ISBN 978-0-571-15310-7
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I'm reading this simply because some of my students have chosen it as part of their independent study. I'm not completely ignorant of Kazuo Ishiguro- I know he is an acclaimed writer, several of his novels been adapted fir film- I have indeed bought to of his previous novel (again on my to be read shelf!) But this is the first Ishiguro I have attempted to read and Oh what a start! It certainly won't be the last!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">If you have an foreign friends who are nostalgic for the taste of the quaint English countryside or are sentimental about bygone day then this si the novel for you. Written by an author who came to England from Japan at the age of 6- not only does he capture English culture perfectly- but manages to capture it during post-WW1 and pre-WW2. An amazing feat for anyone!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">We experience the culture of life in the 'big house' through the eyes of its butler, Mr Stevens, very Downton Abbey! Although stoic to the core we come to understand that he has become the quintessential dignified butler at a cost. He sacrifices relationships not just with his father but the opportunity for love too. Although a relatively short noel there are several layers to this book. It is clear that the novel isn't just about an English butler. We think about time and life- about changes to come, about taking a leap and making the most of the time you have. One could argue the book is also socio-political- exploring the relationships between different social hierarchies and how one might always remain on the outside of this.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Here's me sounding all complex. The book is also imply a beautiful narrative where we are allowed as readers to really understand and explore the inner workings of one character- his hopes, dream, fears and are left wondering if he ever gets what he so clearly deserves. A difficult write to hang everything on the thoughts of one characters, from one perspective and ll set to the back drop of a simple ride and holiday to the Cornwall coast.
He is the kind of character I wish I could sit down and chat with. Time for tea and cake methinks...
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Now for my next Ishiguro- 'When we were Orphans.'
Ian McEwan, Enduring Love
Published 1997
Publisher Johnathon Cape
Pages 247

This book has been on my bookshelf for quite some time. When it came out in 1997 a lot of my friends recommended it to me- warning me it wouldn't be what I expected.Time went on books came and went, as they do- then, whilst I was perusing through my bookshelves I came across it again and thought now's the time. It's only a slim novella and really doesn't take much time to read- but it's oh so worth it!

The title is cleverly misleading as we begin to question will love endure, what does love have to endure even, should love have to endure. Can love withstand any test? Should you stay with someone just because you think you should? What happens when the trust is gone? I know these questions might seem strange but, trust me, when you read it all will make sense.

Protagonist, Joe, is a wonderfully quirky character who at first seems a typically successful guy- interested in both science and writing, he has carved out a successful career for himself- he has regrets in his semi-midlife crisis- but who doesn't? Right?

In a long term relationship with partner, Melissa, we follow him on his journey coming to terms with witnessing a pretty bizarre and unusual accident. At one point in the novella we begin to question Joe's psyche and just as Melissa distrusts him, we begin to too. This isn't a run of the mill book about love and relationships, it's also a psychological thriller too leaving you both heartbroken at the reality that love has to endure in the real world, as well as almost tipping you over the edge of some pretty psychotic behaviour!

I won't give too much away but if you are looking for a quick read that's an instant hit and a page turner that will get you and your friends talking, this is the one. The short length means it would be great for book clubs too as there's some great content up for discussion here!

Well done, Ian McEwan, a clever, clever book, enthralling narrative a truly excellent little read here!
On the BookBugs shop we had a beautiful hardback vintage copy with its dust jacket in tact with beautiful art work on it. Another book that I thought I'll be sad to see this go. No surprise it
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">was only on the shop a few weeks and was sold to an American buyer before I'd even had a chance to sniff the pages!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The wonderful image of the Southern Belle, the damsel in obstinate distress that was Vivienne Leigh in the wonderful film adaptation, that iconic line from Rhett Butler "Well frankly my dear, I don't give a damn!" I have NEVER read ANY Virginia Woolf. I have nothing against the girl, in fact many of my friends remind me what I'm missing out on, but the urge has never befallen me to pick up a copy of one of her novellas. In fact I don't even own one! An oversight which will shortly be corrected. So, if you have any suggestions with which Virginia Woolf I should start with, please leave a suggestion in the comments box below.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">A short but emotional read following the narrative journey of Ellis, a shy, young boy discovering his own body, sexuality and identity in this heart warming tale of love and romance.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Publisher Tinder Press
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">ISBN 978-0735218727
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Not quite the book I thought it was going to be. After reading Sarah Winman's 'When God was A Rabbit,' I was looking forward to another nostalgic tale. This one I didn't see coming. Exploring the difficulties of accepting homosexuality and the AIDs epidemic of the 1980s in London, my heart went out to the poor, trapped, character of Micheal on his journey for acceptance.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This is not a straightforward love story.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">It's hard and it's real.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Combined with Winman's talent for creating realistic characters, Ellis and Micheal were two I came to really care about and wanted to meet in real life! The haunting description of the AIDs ward in a London Hospital stayed with me for a while afterwards. At the end of the text she explains her choices in the novel. Her relentless pursuit for an honest narrative had her interviewing nurses on the frontline caring for young boys caught out by this pervasive and destructive disease.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Despite its difficult subject matter, it is still an enjoyable read that genuinely leaves you caring for the future of its characters, as retrospective narratives collide at the end of the novel.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">A short and easy read that got my Summer reading off with a bang this year! Perfect size to pop in your bag for the plane journey...now...where did I put my sunglasses?
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">A Small Great Novel!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Wow! I'm probably the last of my friends to read this epic novel but I can tell you it was well worth the wait!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Jodie Picoult
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Small Great Things
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">2016
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Publisher Hodder and Stoughton
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">ISBN: 9781444788037
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">500 pages
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">If Harper Lee's 'To Kill a Mockingbird' were to have a book baby with Kathryn Stockett's 'The Help' this is what their beautiful offspring would look like..gasp!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Written in 2016 and set in contemporary New York, Picoult creates a range of realistic narratives exploring the somewhat uncomfortable truth of race between black and white professionals in New York State. Beautifully marrying historical events in a graceful, sensitive way, we follow lead character Ruth on her journey for the truth. Her trial is shocking and frustrating, and genuinely left me emotionally battered as I felt I lived through each tormented question Ruth did. Lawyer Kennedy works hard to defend the label of baby killer in a case that is wrapped up in medical negligence, racism and ignorance.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This book is an un-putdown-able with shocking twists and turns right to the end.How I left the reading of this book for two years i have no idea. It had a profound and lasting effect on me, having me searching out my own soul. Now, what other gems lie hidden in my to be read pile?
